The Delhi Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System is partly functioning, and it is an 82.15 km and 51 meters long semi-high speed high-speed transit system that provides connectivity from Delhi to NCR (National Capital Region) cities like Meerut and Ghaziabad with 22 stations connecting through a trail of tunnels and elevated viaduct. Therefore, the first of the four rapid rail corridors will be constructed under the first phase of the RapidX project, supervised by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC). It is designed to cover the distance between Delhi and Meerut in less than 60 minutes with a maximum speed of 180km/h (110 mph), although the project is being executed for INR 30,274 crores.
The detailed project report of the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System, prepared by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation, got the Uttar Pradesh Government's approval in May 2017. Then, in February 2019, the Government of India gave its consent for project implementation with the approved funding of INR 30,274 crores; however, on 08 March 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the monolith of the Meerut metro project, and the construction began in June 2019. On 20 October 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and opened the RRTS rail service for the public. Significantly, the NCRTC named the service providers and trains RapidX and Namo Bharat.
The entire length of the Delhi—Meerut Rapid Train Route is 68.03km (42.21 miles), although 14.12km will be uplifted and 1.45km will be underground; therefore, the route will be underground in the densely populated areas of Delhi and Meerut and it will be underground near the Yamuna river at Anand Vihar. The complete route is designed accordingly so that the metro maintains the maximum speed of 180km/hr (110mph) and the operating speed of 160km/ hr 100mph. The corridor will serve almost 22 stations departing from Sarai Kale Khan Station and terminating at Modipuram in Meerut.
To make traveling effortless for daily commuters, the Delhi-Meerut regional rapid Train system offers different ways to book tickets, including QR code-based and contactless card ticketing using a bank card or a phone. Travelers can easily purchase the Rapid train ticket at the vending machines, ticket counters, and on NCRTC’s website and mobile app. Now you can avoid delays due to traffic by choosing to travel on the Rapid train; however, fares are also affordable. However, the price may differ based on the distance range, stations you travel from/to, and fare type.
Note: The above-mentioned fares are subject to change. You are advised to check the fares before booking.
