International students studying in the USA have recently found out that under the US President Donald Trump's administration, some of their legal status as residents has been changed. The government of the USA has terminated its visa or revoked it with little notice. The main reason for such a change is the revocation of the visas they used to enter the USA.
In addition, US embassies worldwide have received an order to stop scheduling appointments for student visas, as the government is planning to expand its social media vetting of such applications.
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said, "We're going to continue to vet. Whether you're a student or a tourist who needs a visa, or whoever you are, we're going to be looking at you. We will continue to use every tool we can to assess who it is that's coming here, whether they are students or otherwise," showcasing the rigorous nature of the USA's visa vetting process.
International students in the USA saw significant changes in their visa policy on February 18, 2025, and April 25, 2025. These changes have been made to enhance the country's security, streamline the education system, and reflect the government's current political agenda.
Certain modifications, such as refining the interview criteria, are primarily aimed at decreasing the face-to-face interactions between students and the US embassy, thereby easing the pressure on consular resources.
According to an Associated Press review of university statements, in conformity with school officials and court records, at least 1,222 students at 187 colleges, universities, and university systems have seen their visas revoked or their legal status terminated since late March 2025.
However, the number of students affected by the new student visa changes is much higher. According to inquiries from Senate and House Committees into an April 10 ICE Homeland Security Investigations, at least 4,736 students' visas were terminated in SEVIS.
Individuals aiming to pursue their education at universities in the United States must book their interviews at their local US embassy before obtaining a student visa.
Many Universities in the USA rely mainly on funds received from foreign students. However, international students' tuition fees are higher than those of domestic students, which can make universities uncomfortable.
