As India and Pakistan's tensions are escalating, the Civil Aviation Ministry releases an announcement regarding the closure of airports in India. The announcements include the list of 24 domestic and international airports that are at higher risk near the borders on account of a Pakistani drone and missile attack on Indian cities in Jammu, Punjab, Gujarat, and Rajasthan. The announcement was released after a drone attack in India on Thursday evening, targeting some areas in Jammu, Punjab, and Rajasthan, and the Ministry of Defence has confirmed its origin to be in Pakistan. Although the Indian air defence system intercepted it, it also triggered blackouts and air raid sirens in the nearby cities, and the Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals IPL match was also canceled.
Here is the complete list of airports that are temporarily closed. Since these airports are at higher risk, the ministry has decided to shut them, but there is also a chance that some airports may be added sooner or later.
There is no official information yet declared by the ministry for the closure of other airports. All the nearest cities' airports are still in operation, but they could stop their operations if the tension escalates and becomes more serious.
The list of shut-down airports in India released by the ministry does not include the name of Delhi Airport. On 9th May, Delhi airport released an advisory for the passengers, in which they stated that the airport operations will remain unaffected, but security has been tightened. "Delhi Airport operations remain normal. However, due to evolving airspace conditions and heightened security measures, some flight schedules and security processing timings may be impacted," the statement said.
Yes. There are many flights that have been canceled that depart from Delhi Airport, due to the tensions between India and Pakistan. Only those flights that are traveling on risky routes to the Closed airport are canceled. Around 90 flights are affected, including 33 domestic arrivals and 46 domestic departures. Some international flights have also been canceled, as per the reports. "Delhi Airport operations remain normal. Some flights are impacted due to changing airspace conditions and heightened security," as the official notification states.
