Emirates New Rules Power Banks On Board Flights

Comprehend the New Emirates power bank Restrictions and Rules.

Power banks have eased our lives by offering portable and readily available power storage to juice our devices when needed, especially when travelling. Their portability provides convenience for travellers, allowing them to carry these power banks on flights and keep their essential devices charged, without worrying about power outlets. However, airlines have banned or restricted the carriage of lithium-ion batteries. Emirates has recently made some regulations for the allowance of power banks onboard due to several risk factors. These guidelines announced by the airline are scheduled to come into effect from October 1st; hence, it becomes crucial for travellers to know about these rules. Therefore, go through the subsequent sections and learn comprehensively about the new Emirates power bank restrictions.

Emirates Guidelines on carrying Power Banks

Passengers are not allowed by the airline to use power banks for any reason, whether to charge a device or to charge the power banks through the aircraft's power source. Emirates has explicitly prohibited power banks on its flights. However, passengers can still carry power banks onboard under certain conditions. As per the notice on Emirates' official website, the conditions to bring a power bank onboard are listed below:

  • Passengers can carry one power bank onboard under 100 watt-hours.
  • Power Banks should not be used to charge any personal devices.
  • Charging the power banks through the onboard power supply is prohibited.
  • Power Banks accepted for carriage must have the capacity rating information available.
  • While onboard, power banks must not be stored in the overhead bins but in the seat pockets or the bag under your front seat.
  • Power banks must not be carried through the checked luggage as well.

Why will these Guidelines come into effect?

Emirates has conducted a cautious review of the safety regulations and has seen a significant rise in lithium-battery-related incidents on flights. These batteries contain lithium ions poised in an electrolyte solution that flows through the electrolyte, travelling back and forth between two electrodes, as the battery charges or discharges. However, if damaged or overcharged, it may cause thermal runaway, resulting in consequences such as fire, explosion, and release of toxic gases.

What has Emirates done to tackle any Dangerous Consequences?

Emirates has taken significant steps to counter spontaneous incidents, ensuring everyone's safety onboard. Sequentially, we will be looking at each step carried by the airline to safeguard and prevent these incidents on board:

  • Limiting the number of power banks allowed to be carried onboard.
  • Putting restrictions on the utilisation of power banks on board.
  • Deployment of trained crew members, prepared to take immediate action in such scenarios.
  • Creating regulations to store power banks in accessible locations in the cabin.
  • Creating a constraint on carrying a power bank under 100 watt-hours.

Conclusion

Emirates, a notable airline and a first choice for those who prefer safety and luxury, has taken steps to reduce possible onboard risks through power banks. In recent years, the number of customers utilising power banks has significantly grown, resulting in several unexpected incidents. Therefore, the airline has restricted power banks to mitigate the potential hazardous incidents and ensure passengers' safety.
